“…a story of exquisite charm and beauty…humanity connecting” ~ Theatre People
Do you know someone who has touched every part of your life?
Have you ever loved someone across time and distance?
“Love Letters” by A R Gurney is an evocative, touching and funny play about love, life and a friendship that is forged through a lifetime of shared memories and nostalgic recollections lovingly preserved in written letters, notes and messages
“Love Letters” is a theatre experience of exquisite charm, beauty and humanity connecting in a time honoured way.
Originally written for two actors, each reading their own letters to the audience our production expands the cast to three couples. Each pair depicting life-long friends Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III during three defining phases of their lives: the years of school-yard angst, the discovery of self in young adulthood and reflecting on fifty years of friendship in their mature years.
When Melissa wrote a thank-you note to Andrew in acknowledgement of his birthday present to her, she could not have anticipated the romantic friendship and correspondence that would follow. They are sometimes-sweethearts and sometimes-friends. They go through periods of estrangement and then intense clandestine affairs. They are life-long friends who share their hopes and aspirations, dreams, disappointments, victories and defeats through their letters.
Despite their differences Melissa and Andrew remain each other’s most trusted confidants. They are both from affluent families – Melissa’s has more money, but Andrew has better parents. There two friends communicate through angst-ridden boarding school experiences, European adventures, failed marriages and the highs and lows of their careers.
